The Homestake Mining Co. donation included 186 surface acres and many buildings and other infrastructure to the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority.
More than 20 different experiments already are underway at Sanford Underground Laboratory. Many of these projects are researching how best to install larger experiments later on.
In 1965, Dr. Ray Davis installed a solar-neutrino detector 4,850 feet underground in the Homestake gold mine. In 2002 he won the Nobel Prize for Physics for his work here.
